Submit

PRISM international publishes exciting, original material from established and emerging writers in Canada and around the world. We accept submissions year-round. Due to the high volume of submissions we receive each month, reply times range between 2 to 6 months, depending on the time of year.

Please note: PRISM does not accept submissions from current and incoming students and faculty of the University of British Columbia’s Creative Writing Program (this includes the UBC Optional-Residency MFA Program). In order to submit, UBC alumni cannot have taken a UBC Creative Writing Program course during the previous two years.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Our annual contests are open! For more information please refer to our contest page.
  • Send original, unpublished material in short fiction, poetry, translation (into English), literary non-fiction, and drama. We do not consider work that has appeared on the internet unless it has only been posted to writers’ forums for discussion.
  • Include a brief cover letter with a short bio and publications list. Specify the genre of your submission in the cover letter. If submitting poetry, please include the number of poems.
  • We welcome simultaneous submissions, but if your piece is accepted elsewhere, please let us know immediately.
  • We do not return manuscripts, so please ensure that you retain a copy of your submission for your files.
  •  We strongly prefer to reply via email. If you list an email address on your submission we will send our reply via email, even if you include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). Please only include an SASE if you cannot be reached via email. If sending an SASE, please make sure you provide sufficient Canadian postage or an International Reply Coupon (IRC) if you are submitting from outside of Canada.
  • Along with your submission, please provide complete contact information, including an email address. Remember, we strongly prefer to reply via email!
  • Manuscripts must be typed and double-spaced (in the case of prose) on letter-sized paper. Poetry should be single-spaced.
  • PRISM will accept handwritten submissions from writers in prison.
  • We do not accept email submissions. For online submissions, send poetry here and fiction, creative non-fiction and drama here.
  • Please send only one genre at a time — one story or four poems per submission. Maximum submission length: 25 pages (6,250 words).  Please send only one submission at a time, and wait for our reply before submitting again.
  • Non-fiction pieces should be creative, exploratory, or experimental in tone.  We do not publish rhetorical, academic, or journalistic non-fiction.
  • We do not publish genre writing such as romance, horror, or science fiction. Please read back issues of PRISM as a guideline.
  • Translations are sought in all genres and must be undertaken with the permission of the original author. Wherever possible, include a copy of the original work. We are an English-language publication, and, as such, accept translations of work into English.
  • We purchase first North American serial rights, and pay $40/printed page for poetry, $20/printed page for prose. Contributors will receive copies of the issue in which their work appears. The editorial board awards an annual $500 prize to an outstanding poetry contributor each year.
  • We also welcome submissions for cover art. We accept photography only, submitted by email, in high resolution PDF, TIF or PNG files. We pay $300 CAD for the cover of one issue, along with three copies of that issue. An image of the cover will also appear on our website, the British Columbia Association of Magazine Publishers website, and the affiliated websites of Magazines Canada.
  • If you have a question or concern about a piece you have submitted, please contact the appropriate content editor via email. Please DO NOT leave a note for us on Submittable, as we are very unlikely to see it.

  3. How do you submit $3.00 CAD. Is this the fee for submitting work?

    • prismmagonline says:

Hi Joan. Submissions through submittable cost $3.00 CAD (there was a glitch on our account that made it USD by default but we’ve solved that). If you’re submitting by mail you only need to pay for postage. For everything else kindly follow the guidelines above. I hope this answers your question!

  4. Good to know there’s an option to submit for only $3.00. Thanks!
